Common Alcohol Addiction Withdrawal Symptoms

The point of alcohol detoxification is to make sure that, when you experience any withdrawal symptoms, they will be safe and manageable. Alcohol withdrawal can involve mild to severe life-threatening symptoms and that is why it is important to seek professional medical help to ensure you are monitored and kept as safe as possible. Below you will find alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Symptoms suffered during alcohol withdrawal include:

  • Random, temporary fevers and sweats
  • Irritability or paranoia
  • Runny nose or eyes
  • Nausea or trouble eating
  • Inability to focus or read
  • Uncharacteristic depressing thoughts
  • Body aches
  • Anxiety

More serious alcohol withdrawal symptoms:

  • Full-body shakes or tremors
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Delirium Tremens (DT)

Who Should Detox from Alcohol?

Alcohol addiction is extremely dangerous especially if you do not seek professional help to minimize the withdrawal symptoms. That is why our experts at Decision Point Center will help determine if detox is necessary. At the end of the day, we will make sure that you or your loved one is safely getting the necessary treatment for alcohol withdrawal.

We generally recommend alcohol detox for patients who have:

  • Struggled with alcohol use disorder
  • Pre-existing medical conditions that could make withdrawals more dangerous.

During the intake procedure, we can review your options and medical history. In this way, you will know if alcohol detox will be part of your recovery program before it begins.

The Process of Medically-Supervised Detoxication

Medically-supervised alcohol detox involves a carefully managed process to help individuals safely withdraw from alcohol dependence while minimizing health risks. Here are the typical steps involved:

  • Evaluation:
    • Assessment: A healthcare professional evaluates the individual's alcohol use, medical history, physical and mental health, and any previous detox attempts.
    • Physical Examination: A thorough physical examination helps identify any health issues that might complicate detox.
  • Stabilization:
    • Initial Intervention: Depending on the severity of alcohol dependence, immediate medical intervention might be necessary to address dehydration, malnutrition, or other acute complications.
    • Medication Management: Medications may be prescribed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings. Common medications include benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, or other drugs to manage specific symptoms.
    • Monitoring: Close monitoring of vital signs and symptoms is crucial to ensure safety and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
  • Detoxification:
    • Tapering Off: In some cases, a gradual reduction in alcohol intake, also known as tapering, is recommended rather than abrupt cessation to minimize severe withdrawal symptoms.
    • Withdrawal Management: As the body detoxifies from alcohol, individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, tremors, hallucinations, seizures, or delirium tremens (DTs). Medical supervision is vital to manage these symptoms effectively.
    • Psychological Support: Counseling, therapy, or support groups might be included to address psychological aspects of addiction and provide coping strategies.

We Understand You May Have Questions

Let Us Provide You With Answer
  • What Programs Are Offered?
Decision Point Center is a residential treatment program that covers a variety of treatment therapies depending on what is needed for the individual.
  • How Long Will I Be In Treatment?
Because substance use is a chronic disease, completion of our program is based on your unique needs and progress, and not on a date. While our Residential Program is a good guidepost, treatment over a longer period may be prescribed if it’s warranted.
  • Can I Afford Treatment?
Thanks to insurance plans and financing options, more people than ever before are able to receive the treatment they need. When you call our Admissions Team, they will leave no stone unturned in finding ways for you to obtain treatment including setting up a payment plan that meets your needs. You can even verify your insurance coverage here.
  • How Much One-On-One Individual Care Will I Get?
Individual therapy at Decision Point is determined by the individual needs of each and every client. In combination with our group therapy, our client will have scheduled one-on-one sessions with our specialists. These sessions consist of Family Counseling, Trauma Therapy, Psychiatry, Career and Academic Counseling, or Nutrition Counseling. In addition to these individual sessions, our clients will have a primary therapist who will work with them individually and in a group setting.
  • Continuum of Care
At Decision Point Center we are committed to ALWAYS walking alongside you. Even once you have completed our program, we make ourselves and our resources available to you any time you need.
  • Array of Possibilities
Just like no two individuals are alike, neither are two addictions. We offer many different services in order to ensure your program is customized to your unique needs and goals.
  • Full-Person Plan
Unlike other centers, we treat the individual, not the addiction. We work with you both during treatment and then work to help prepare you for once you leave. The journey begins with us but continues with you.
  • Decades of Experience
Experience one of the most comprehensive assessments in the treatment world today and we understand that in order to treat the addiction, we must also treat the underlying cause.
