Understanding the Link Between Addiction and Mental Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is now the ninth leading cause of death in the US. In addition, suicide rates have been on the rise in nearly every state since 1999. Suicide is also a leading cause of death for people aged 10-34 and accounts for more than 45,000 deaths yearly. Here are a few fast facts to consider.

Fact #1: There's a Clear Relationship Between Suicide and Substance Use

To understand why suicide rates are so high, it's important to look at the relationship between suicide and substance use. Research shows that alcohol and drug use only account for a small percentage of suicides overall. However, there is a link between substance use and suicidal behavior. People who struggle with sobriety are more likely to attempt or die by suicide than those who don't struggle with addiction.

Mental health awareness and treatment are the most significant factors in preventing suicides. Unfortunately, many people who struggle with mental health issues don't get help until it's too late.

Mental illness is often a major factor in suicides, especially among younger people. In fact, more than half of all people who die by suicide have a mental illness.
