Decision Point Center Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and understanding about mental health conditions and advocating for those affected by them.

As Arizona’s top addiction rehab for over 20 years, our team at Decision Point Center knows firsthand how important mental wellness can be for folks struggling with addictions to drugs and alcohol. It’s why we make mental health a priority in our groundbreaking programs and treatment plans, and why we’re proud to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month by educating others about this month of observance and how mental health plays a key part in the journey to recovery.

About Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month, observed annually in May, is a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues, combating stigma, and promoting support and understanding for those affected by mental illness. Established in 1949 in the United States, this observance has grown into a global movement, shining a spotlight on the importance of mental health and well-being in communities worldwide.

Today, Mental Health Awareness Month is spearheaded by organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which has recognized this month of observance for over 20 years. Along with other advocacy groups, these organizations play a critical part in educating the public about the prevalence of mental health conditions, the many myths and misconceptions about them, and the availability of support for those struggling with mental health issues.

This year, Decision Point Center is proud to support these organizations in promoting the annual theme for Mental Health Awareness Month 2024: Take the Moment. This campaign is meant to champion the importance of destigmatizing mental health by normalizing the practice of taking moments to prioritize mental health care without guilt or shame.

Mental Health: Embracing a Holistic Approach to Addiction Recovery

At Decision Point Center, we’ve been able to help thousands of individuals break free from substance abuse problems and build foundations for sustainable health and happiness by making mental health a major focus in the programs and treatment plans we offer.

Having worked with so many folks in times of turmoil, we have extensive insight into the profound and multifaceted link between mental health and addiction. Many individuals struggling with addiction, for example, also face underlying mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or bipolar disorder. Conversely, substance abuse can exacerbate these conditions, creating a vicious cycle that is challenging to break without proper support and intervention.

Whether providing treatment for alcohol addiction or addiction to drugs like opioids, heroin, cocaine, or benzodiazepines, we embrace a whole-person approach to recovery, recognizing that mental health plays a pivotal role in one's journey to sobriety. Some of the ways we provide mental health support include:

  • Dual Diagnosis Treatment. One of the key pillars of our approach is the recognition and treatment of dual diagnoses. We understand that effective addiction treatment must address underlying mental health issues to achieve lasting recovery. Our team of experienced professionals includes those who specialize in treating disorders that commonly co-occur with addiction, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and trauma / PTSD. By providing integrated care that targets both addiction and mental health, we empower our patients to heal holistically.
  • Proven Therapies. In addition to individual counseling and group therapy, we offer proven therapies that promote mental well-being. These include expert-led programs for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which teaches skills and strategies for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps individuals learn how to interrupt negative thoughts and unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving, as well as EMDR Trauma Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), motivational interviewing, and more.
  • Fun & Enriching Activities. Because we take a whole-person approach to treating addiction, we also offer a range of therapies and enrichment activities designed to benefit patients physically and emotionally. These include mindfulness practices, yoga, art therapy, and experiential therapies such as adventure therapy and various sports. These modalities not only help individuals manage stress and develop healthy coping mechanisms but also promote self-awareness and personal growth.
